Friday’s edition of Legalbrief Today contained an excerpt from an article in the Mercury on continued resistance to the Financial Intelligence Centre Amendment (Fica) Bill becoming law.
Those against it threatened to take it to the Constitutional Court if it is approved by Parliament this week. The Black Business Council and the Progressive Professionals Forum on Thursday insisted that the Bill was not consistent with the provisions of the Constitution, and Parliament should not approve it.
“However, notes a report in The Mercury, the Banking Association of SA and the Council for the Advancement of the SA Constitution urged President Jacob Zuma to sign it into law as it was long overdue.
Parliament will debate the Bill on Tuesday (28 February 2017).
The Black Business Council’s Danisa Baloyi said they would not allow this Bill to be approved or signed into law. There were still many provisions in the Bill that needed to be discussed at next Tuesday’s debate in the National Assembly. ‘We are waiting for that debate. If it is adopted we will weigh our options, which include going to the Constitutional Court,’ Baloyi is quoted as saying.
