Media update’s Aisling McCarthy recently took readers through a list of 15 terms that you’ll need to know in order to fully understand the POPI Act.
The Protection of Personal Information Act or POPI Act is South Africa’s equivalent of the EU GDPR. It sets conditions for everyone to lawfully process the personal information of data subjects (both natural and juristic persons). The POPI Act was enacted in 2013 but has yet to become fully effective in South Africa.
Terminology that McCarthy refers to include the definition of biometrics, descriptions of competent and what consent entails as well as an explanation of what a data subject is.
