According to the World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report 2020, the top five global risks in terms of likelihood are all environmental. In the recent survey, respondents were asked to assess the likelihood of a global risk occurring over the course of the next 10 years, as well as the severity of its impact at a global level if it were to occur.
The top 5 risks by likelihood over the next 10 years:
● | Extreme weather events (e.g. floods, storms, etc.) |
● | Failure of climate change mitigation and adaptation |
● | Major natural disasters (e.g. earthquake, tsunami, volcanic eruption, geomagnetic storms) |
● | Major biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse |
● | Human-made environmental damage and disasters |
These are the top 5 risks by severity of impact over the next 10 years:
● | Failure of climate change mitigation and adaptation |
● | Weapons of mass destruction |
● | Major biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse |
● | Extreme weather events (e.g. floods, storms, etc.) |
● | Water crises |
One has to question what impact the current flavour of the month in terms of media coverage has on the real world out there. We fully endorse the focus on the threats to the environment, and its long-term impact on the world. We are thankful that this awareness can be converted to practical steps to address and rectify matters to the extent that we can. What is of major concern is the threat to world peace and stability posed by apparently unstable politicians who live in their own cuckoo worlds and appear blissfully unaware of the ramifications of their actions in the real world you and I live in.
